The Series rolls into the Irish Hills this weekend as the drivers will take to the track at the newly repaved Michigan International Speedway. This high banked, fast two mile oval already generated speeds of 200 miles per hour when the cars entered the turns. Now, the repave has ramped up speeds with drivers hitting top speeds of 220 miles per hour! This will be some of the fasting racing ever seen in NASCAR history, but I can still help you out with your fantasy picks this weekend because those who are good at this track will stay that way.
Fantasy Preview: Michigan
The Favorites:
Denny Hamlin: This guy has only finished outside of the top-3 once in the last five races here and has two wins in that span. With a career average finish of 9.2 here and 8 top-10's, I would call you a fool if you didn't have him on your team.
Kyle Busch: Teammate to Hamlin, it took him a bit longer to find victory lane here, but that doesn't mean he struggled here by any means. He had finishes of 3rd and 1st in the two races here last season, and I seriously doubt the high speeds will bother Wild Thing.
Carl Edwards: In fifteen career races here, this guy has only finished outside of the top-12 twice. Are you kidding me? Cousin Carl has this place down pat and this could be where he finally ends his winless streak.
The Darkhorses:
Brad Keselowski: Now he only has one top-10 here in five career races and that was a 3rd place effort at the most recent race here last August. But this guy is a Michigan native and wants to win at this track more than any other. When this guy gets hungry, people better watch out.
Jeff Gordon: Gordon has two career wins at this track, but those came back at the turn of the century. After a lot of struggles here recently, he's hitting his stride again, leading laps and finishing up front. If bad luck doesn't bite him again, expect a strong finish.
Landon Cassill: Now this would be a pick where you're trying to find a cheap gamble when you decide to pick four high priced drivers. Cassill finished 12th in this race last year in not so great equipment. He's about in the same boat this year, but maybe with a little better of a car. Don't count him out for a solid top-20 finish.
Stay Away From:
Paul Menard: He's only finished in the top-10 once here and has an average finish of 23.3 for his career here. You can really find a better bargain driver this week because Menard most likely won't put up the numbers you need.
Jeff Burton: He only has one top-10 finish since 2002 at Michigan. He used to be competitive everywhere, but it now seems the veteran is starting to succeed at only certain tracks. This isn't one of them.
Martin Truex Jr.: The only time he's found success at Michigan was in 2007 where he finished 2nd in both races and that was also his best season he's had. He could do alright, but I'm not betting on it this weekend.
Have fun picking!
