Fontana Weekend Recap

Fontana Weekend Recap:

Fast and relentless.....until the rains came. But even so, when it all shook out, the fastest car still won. Tony Stewart captured his second win of the 2012 season, and his seventh in the last fifteen dating back to last year. On the Nationwide side, a Cup Series regular won for the first time this year with Joey Logano taking the win.

Logano by far had the fastest car all day and kept all of the Nationwide regulars at bay and a hard charging Brad Keselowski. Ricky Stenhouse took home 2nd, Keselowski 3rd, Brian Scott finally had a good race and finished in 4th, and Austin Dillon rounded out the top 5. Logano had the most consistent car all day and though Keselowski, Stenhouse, Kyle Busch and Elliott Sadler managed to lead for some time throughout the day, Logano used the last run of the day to cement himself in the lead and took the win. Elliott Sadler retains the points lead with Stenhouse in 2nd and Dillon in 3rd.

Though the fans may have felt cheated from the failure to run the last 70 laps due to the rain, there was no doubt that the right driver wound up in victory lane. Tony Stewart kept himself in position up front when the rain came and scored his second victory of the year. At the beginning of the race, everybody knew time was short with the approaching rain but nobody thought they'd actually have been able to complete 130 laps. It was pretty impressive that they actually ran those 130 laps caution free, with the lone caution of the race being when it started raining. After about an half hour delay, the race was called and Stewart was declared the victor. Stewart battled with Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin nearly all afternoon, but always had the better car on the long runs which panned out perfectly.

Due to some drivers believing the rain would let up, drivers up front like Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson decided to pit and lost their track position. So when the race was called, it ended up as Stewart, Kyle Busch in 2nd, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 3rd, Kevin Harvick 4th and Carl Edwards 5th. Greg Biffle retained the points lead after a 6th place finish, Harvick stayed in 2nd, Earnhardt moved up to 3rd, Stewart jumped up to 4th with the win, and Martin Truex Jr. slipped one spot to 5th. The Series heads to "The Paperclip" this weekend, otherwise known as the smallest track on the circuit, Martinsville Speedway. There should be some awesome bumping and bashing next weekend, can't wait for the action!
